What is X-Ray?

An X-ray is a type of imaging test that uses a small amount of radiation to create pictures of the inside of your body.  Think of it like a special camera that can see through your skin and muscles to show your bones and organs.  Doctors use X-rays to look for a variety of things, including:

  • Broken bones
  • Infections
  • Arthritis
  • Certain types of cancer

How does an X-ray work?

When you get an X-ray, you will lie on a table or stand in front of an X-ray machine. The machine will then send a burst of radiation through your body.  Different tissues in your body absorb radiation differently. For example, bones absorb a lot of radiation, while soft tissues like muscles and organs absorb less.

The X-ray machine detects the radiation that passes through your body and creates an image on a computer screen or film.  The denser the tissue, the whiter it will appear on the X-ray image.  Bones will appear white, while soft tissues will appear gray. Air will appear black on an X-ray image.

What are the benefits of getting an X-ray?

X-rays are a quick and painless way to get images of the inside of your body.  They are also very versatile and can be used to image a variety of different body parts.  Because they are relatively inexpensive, X-rays are often the first imaging test that a doctor will order when they are trying to diagnose a medical condition.
